Initially released on the PlayStation 2 over a year ago, Namco’s gritty action game features bullet-time mechanics and third-person gunplay, with nothing to lose, and not the bullet-tin.
To the game’s credit, DTR does balance its predictable recipe with a few innovative concepts of its own. The most notable of these is Shadow, your K9 attack dog, which can be used to tear out enemies’ throats and navigate through narrow or inaccessible passages to activate switches.
Players can also grab human shields, disarm enemies, and hurl gas canisters at opponents, causing them to explode in the vicinity of the enemy’s head.
However, the game’s primary issue is that it is a 15-month-old console game. Although the conversion process was faultless, the entire interface was designed to make Max Payne-style action manageable without a keyboard and mouse.
As a result, when played with a keyboard and mouse, DTR feels like a flimsy kid’s game, with an ‘acquire target’ function rather than actual aiming.
Having said that, Dead To Rights does provide some entertaining, mindless fun. Besides the slow-motion violence, there’s a deliberate B-grade exploitation feel to the game, which takes you through various whorehouses, strip clubs, and similarly constructed environments. There’s even a rhythm-action-style pole-dancing mini-game that is sure to elicit a chuckle.
Ultimately, this is a shallow console experience, especially when compared to games like Max Payne 2, and is not suitable for PC gaming.
