Street Rod II is a game brimming with vast potential! Many a night, I’ve wished for a contemporary version of this game, yet no software company has succeeded in delivering one thus far. This game undoubtedly holds a timeless charm, being the pioneer of its kind and a sequel to Hot Rod.
In this game, you assume the role of a skilled car mechanic. Starting with no car but a small sum of money, your journey commences with the quest to find a suitable vehicle through classified ads in the local paper. To finance your car’s upgrades and obtain new vehicles, you’ll have to engage in races against other drivers in the town.
There are three available tracks, including a straight 1/4-mile drag race. You can choose to race for money or for ownership of the vehicles (pink slips). Admittedly, the racing graphics leave much to be desired, and car handling remains constant throughout.
Unfortunately, this places some constraints on car tuning, primarily limited to engine, tires, gearbox, aerodynamics, and exhaust. Nevertheless, these options are ample to maintain the game’s allure.
The game offers extensive engine modifications, along with a wide array of cars and manufacturer parts. Consequently, extracting the utmost potential from your car proves immensely enjoyable and challenging.
The ultimate objective is to surpass ‘The King,’ who possesses the game’s finest car (and companion). Gaining his car also means acquiring his companion. Regrettably, the time available to accomplish this feat is restricted, adding a degree of urgency to the gameplay.
What prevents this game from achieving a perfect score are the subpar driving graphics engine, the absence of suspension and handling modifications, and the time constraints. It’s worth noting that the sound quality leaves much to be desired as well.
Nonetheless, my passion for cars might bias this review. Nevertheless, I wholeheartedly recommend this game to anyone with even a faint interest in automobiles.
